In which I admit my fear of the great big button known as Shuffle Songs and face it. And really enjoy the results!

For as long as I’ve had an iPod (and I’ve had one of the originals), I’ve always filled them with songs. My still-going-strong third generation 40GB iPod is full of music I felt I ought to have. I’ve always been averse to buying single tracks off albums and prefer to get the whole lot. But I have a confession to make… I’m afraid of most of my music. To be precise, I’ve been afraid of using that conceptually huge function known as Shuffle Songs.

No more. I’m facing my fear. I just stuck the iPod in the dreaded mode all afternoon and the last five tracks played are:

Strangers in the Night, Frank Sinatra

Tracks of My Tears, Smokey Robinson

September Song, Sarah Vaughan

Last Night, The Strokes

Everybody Knows That You’re Insane, Queens of the Stone Age

I know this is almost 8 years too late, but it’s like having my own eclectic radio station! Yes, I know. It is sad.

Oooh, Supergrass is on! Haven’t heard this in years!

Apple intros the new iPod Shuffle, with VoiceOver.

A little while ago Apple announced the new Shuffle. It’s t-i-n-y! Tiny! At £49 it’s perfectly priced as well.

Watching the guided tour made me roll around laughing at one point though. At around 75% of the way though the video when “Hannah” demos the VoiceOver functionality, she points out that the voice changes depending on whether you sync the Shuffle to a Mac or PC. The Mac synthetic voice is male and sounds good. The PC voice sounds, well, “special.”
